The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is a midsize pickup provided in Regular Cabin, Access Cabin (an extended cabin with small rear-hinged doors) and Double Cabin (crew cabin with four full-size front-hinged doors) configurations. Both Regular and Access Cabs come with a 6-foot bed. A 5-foot bed is traditional on Double Cabin models, with a 6-foot bed available as an feature.
All three Toyota Tacoma body styles are provided in a choice of two- or four-wheel drive. Rear-wheel-drive Prerunner versions adopt the rugged exterior of their more off-road-capable siblings but without the added weight, reduced fuel efficiency and enhanced traction of actual four-wheel-drive versions. In its base trim level, the Toyota Tacoma Regular Cabin is an perfect work truck with more traditional amenities than other bare-bones pickups. Traditional features include 15-inch metal wheels, a limited-slip differential, air-conditioning, a composite bedliner, a bed utility rail system, a cloth seat bench, a tilt-and-telescoping helm and a four-speaker audio system with a CD player, radio and optional stereo slot. Four-wheel-drive versions equipped with an automatic transmission also get front bucket seatings. The base model Access Cabin gains updated cloth upholstery, front bucket seatings, a back seat with under-seat cargo, performance locks and windows, and a six-speaker audio system. The entry-level Toyota Tacoma Double Cabin adds 16-inch metal wheels, a front skid plate, performance mirrors, driver bench lumbar adjustment and an updated six-speaker audio system with an Ipod/usb stereo interface and Bluetooth phone and stereo connectivity.
Most features (which can vary by the region of the country in which the truck is sold) are grouped into packages with varying availability depending on your body style and drivetrain choices. The Comfort suite adds a sliding back window, privacy glass, keyless entry, cruise control, steering-wheel stereo controls and performance mirrors to Access Cabs. Several variations of the SR5 suite (available on all but Regular Cabs and X-runner Access Cab) typically combine look and dashboard upgrades like a chrome grille and back bumper, the Comfort suite items, foglights, variable-speed wipers, nicer cloth upholstery, a rearview camera and a leather-wrapped helm. The TRD Off-road suite contains 16-inch alloy wheels, fender flares, a heavy-duty suspension, a locking back differential, hill start assist and hill descent control (automatic only), skid plates, sport seatings and the extra comfort items from SR5 and Comfort packages. The street-oriented TRD Sport suite contains 17-inch alloy wheels, a hood scoop, a sport suspension, hill start assist and hill descent control (automatic only), sport seatings and the extra comfort items from the SR5 and Comfort packages. The TRD Sport Update suite adds to the regular version 18-inch chrome-clad wheels.
V6 Access and Double Cabs with the short bed can be equipped with the T|X and T|X Pro packages. The T|X adds original black alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, black tube steps and a stainless-steel exhaust tip. The T|X Pro adds to those items a cat-back exhaust and special side graphics.
V6-powered Prerunners and 4x4 Double Cabs can also be equipped with Screen Stereo with navigation, which contains a touchscreen controls interface, a navigator, a rearview camera, voice controls, HD radio and Toyota Entune real-time data and Internet audio streaming. .
